Game, Fish and Parks

Through meetings, facilitations, and relationship building the Department has supported the Department of Game, Fish, and Parks to engage tribal wildlife and natural resource agency counterparts to improve cooperative resource management. The Department of Tribal Relations has worked with GFP's tribal liaison to develop cooperative Memorandums of Understanding with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Oglala Sioux Tribe, and Rosebud Sioux Tribe to establish normative communications protocols and formal processes for state and tribal wildlife resource managers to share information and develop hunting and fishing rules considering the state's checkerboarded tribal-state ownership landscape. The Department continues to support GFP's improved efforts to work directly with tribal wildlife agency counterparts to improve management of wildlife resources through effective government to government state-tribal interactions.
